Orchestral string instruments can be played by BOWING (ARCO) which means that the sound is produced by using a bow made from wood and horsehair.
Orchestral instruments can also be PLUCKED (PIZZACATO) using the fingers to pluck the strings.
Guitars are played by STRUMMING, the player uses their fingers or a plectrum across the strings to make them sound.

Brass Instruments
All brass instruments can change pitch by the pressure of the air that is blown into the mouthpiece, this allows the instruments to play notes on a harmonic series. There are also other technologies added to the instruments to give them more freedom to play pitches not on the harmonic series.
Percussion Instruments
Percussion instruments are categorised as TUNED or UNTUNED with most pitched percussion instruments being part of the idiophone family and unpitched drums being part of the membranophone family. Most percussion instruments are made to sound by being STRUCK by a beater or a stick.
